Abstract:

Basic Sciences should no longer be taught in the traditional manner in the medical curriculum. The design the contemporary medical curriculum incorporates clinical and transitional research, an increased presence of electronic technology, the implementation of student-centered learning and the increased emphasis on professionalism, ethics and interprofessional teamwork. This lecture will stress on the role of teachers as coaches and facilitators rather than directors. Students also need to concrete knowledge to of fundamental basic sciences alongside with its application to clinical practice as in problem based learning (PBL). Examples of PBL schools worldwide are Universities of Maastricht (The Netherlands), McMaster (Canada). Furthermore, basic sciences cannot exist in isolation from the clinical disciplines and must contribute to clinical outcomes. The best example of this trial in Egypt is the Suez Canal University Model which incorporates basic and clinical science from the early beginning (first year of medical school) till the final year through PBL and CBE (community based education). A trial for integrating basic sciences was started five years ago in Al-Azhar University by eminent professors. Some recommendations are ready for application. Examples of these are teaching “spinal tracts” in Anatomy, Histology and Physiology. This can be integrated in one module shared by thee specialties. Another example is the module of “antimicrobial agents” in Microbiology and Pharmacology. In Conclusion, basic scientists must remain learners in this new age of medical education and must strive so that all efforts benefit students: the future generation of healthcare providers.
