Abstract:
Sea cucumbers are an abundant group of motile reef invertebrates . They are a prominent part of coral reef cryptofauna (Sloan et al., 1979), and are found in man reef habitats including sand and mud (Clark and Rowe, 1971), corals, mangrove, algae, (Guille and Ribes, 1981; Guille et al., 1986 , Cherbonnier, 1988), se grasses ( Mercier et al., 2000 ) and rocks (Mezali, 2001). However they have a special organ called Cuvierian organ that contains toxic substance, this study show the hematological effect of the extract of sea cucumber Holathuria arta was collected from the Aqba Gulf in Egypt was studied in different intervals ( half hour , one hour, 6 hours,12 hours and 24 hours ) .
The mean level ± S.E of serum WBCs in normal rats was found to be ( 6.69 ± 0.17) 103/mm3 , white blood cell count was significantly affected in rats injected with LD25 reaching maximum value after 1 hour (79.5% , P< 0.05 ), then decreased through experiment period , while platelet The mean level ± S.E of serum in normal rats was found to be 93 ± 2.1 g/L , after injection with LD25 decreased through the first hour (-35.1 %,P<0.05)then reaching normal level after 24 hours . The mean level ± S.E of serum RBCs in normal rats was found to be 7.475 ± 0.27 g/L and hemoglobin mean level ± S.E of serum Hb. in normal rats was found to be 14.06 ± 0.33 g/L. After injection of LD25 in rats Red blood cells count and hemoglobin weren’t significantly affected. In conclusion, the extract toxin of sea cucmber of Holothuria atra has direct effect on white blood cells count and platelet with no other effect on red blood cell count or hemoglobin.
