Abstract:
The significance of sensor technology is constantly growing. Sensors allow us to monitor our surroundings in ways we could barely imagine a few years ago. New sensor applications are being identified everyday which broadens the scope of the technology and expands its impact on everyday life. For example, the modern automobile is composed of hundreds of small processors and sensors all seamlessly coordinating with each other in the background to enable efficient operation of the car, but more importantly, to provide critical safety capabilities. With the advent of low-cost embedded sensing platforms, such a vision is being extended to many other parts of our lives, including energy and resource management, health care, and home safety. For example, the Microsoft Kinect, which was originally intended as a gaming platform, is having huge impact in areas such as smart home sensing and surgical robotics.
This presentation will provide a state of the art and future trends of sensors applications in our daily lives with more emphasis on navigation and geospatial mapping applications. Some of the current developed and possible future system’s accuracy performance will be demonstrated through real-life examples.
