:Background

The decreasing of fossil fuels and increasing concern towards global warming creates the need and demand for renewable energy sources. Residential, commercial and rural buildings, not connected to the power grid are always in need of continuous supply of electric power. With renewable energy sources, a significant number of drawbacks with fossil fuels can be eliminated, as the energy could readily be accessible for all requirements with minimal cost and ecological effect.

:Purpose

In this paper an attempt was made to design a hybrid solar and vertical win turbine to generate power for charging a battery bank for powering a rural area building where the electric power is most needed. The overall cost is reduced by combining these wind and solar energy systems into one unit. this system will eliminate power failure or overload situations, and will also provide clean and consistent source of energy that we acquire to perform the smaller procedures necessary to help improve the quality of life in the area of implementation.

:Methods

This paper will walk through the steps of understanding the loads to be handled, the background behind wind power, solar power and then focus on the design specifications of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT). VAWTs tend to be more rigorous to design for, but they have to design for, but they have also picked up a large amount of popularity in the last decade. VAWTs have several non-dimensional parameters that must be designed for to achieve high efficiency, which is discussed for to achieve high efficiency, which is discussed towards the end of this paper. the last part of this paper also focuses on several cases on wind turbines built and tested by the author based on the Cookeville, TN weather. A town in the USA where the average wind speed varies between 7-20 miles per hour.

:Results & conclusion

The experimental work shows that renewable resources have become a viable option to provide green energy. When compared with the growing costs, demand, and scarcity of non-renewable sources, solar and wind energy quickly recoups the cost of its implementation. it provides a low maintenance and effective source of power. Long term this proves to be a much better alternative not only due to less pollution but the lower cost in the long run. As time goes on the initial investment cost for a renewable energy system will not only continue to lower, but it can also afford more efficient systems. The combination of solar and wind energy sources provides a reliable hybrid system that continues to charge the batteries regardless of current weather. Systems similar to the one under consideration can be implemented for any power consumption requirements. Even with varying initial implementation costs, these systems will quickly pay for themselves at any rural area, proving to be a very worthwhile investment. Following these recommendations could allow Tennessee Tech to generate green energy from wind power and solar power
