Once in a blue moon? Once a week? Several times a day<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Bottled water has become so prevalent in our society, a lot of us don\u2019t give it a second thought. But it was not that long ago that bottled water seemed, well, irrational. I mean\u2026 it\u2019s water. Why would we pay 10,000 times more per gallon for it to come in a plastic container?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The idea that bottled water is cleaner, safer and better-tasting than tap water has fueled explosive sales in the United States. In 1976, the average person only drank about a gallon of bottled water per year, but by 2017, the <a href=\"http:\/\/pacinst.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pacific Institute<\/a>estimates that each person will consume more than 300 gallons of it annually.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For the bottled industry, that massive growth is clearly welcome news. But for everyone else, and especially for the environment \u2014 not so much. Because along with the upward trend in sales comes a number of serious issues that are becoming harder and harder to ignore. Not only is bottled water taking a toll on our pocketbooks, it\u2019s become one of the biggest threats to our planet \u2014 adding significantly to carbon emissions, overflowing our landfills, and destroying our marine environment \u2014 leaving it up to us to answer, is it really worth the cost?<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">BOTTLES, BOTTLES EVERYWHERE<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Every single second, Americans go through about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/norm-schriever\/post_5218_b_3613577.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1500 plastic water bottles<\/a>. That\u2019s a staggering <strong>50 billion water bottles a year<\/strong>. And out of the 50 billion bottles of water being bought each year, the vast majority still end up in a landfill \u2014 where they take over <strong>1,000 years to bio-degrade<\/strong>, and if incinerated, they produce toxic fumes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9409\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/rri-tonyrobbins-com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/21133634\/earth-01.png\" alt=\"Bottled-water_bottles-everywhere_inpost\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>RESOURCES WASTED<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Bottled water requires a number of resources throughout its life cycle. Energy is required to make the plastic and turn it into bottles, to obtain and treat the water, to fill and cap the bottles, and to transport it to market.\u00a0For example, it\u2019s estimated that producing plastic bottles consumes the equivalent of more than <a href=\"http:\/\/pacinst.org\/publication\/bottled-water-fact-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">17 million barrels of oil<\/a> a year in the U.S. alone. That\u2019s enough to fuel more than one million cars for an entire year.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9415\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/rri-tonyrobbins-com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/21133636\/earth-02.png\" alt=\"bottled-water-environment_oil-use_inpost\" \/><\/h3>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><br \/>\nCARBON DIOXIDE<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As you know, burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The 17 million barrels of oil used to produce the PET for plastic water bottles emitted 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide into the environment \u2014 or approximately the same as 400,000 cars produce in a year. And that\u2019s just from the production of the water bottles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As for the total energy output of bringing this water to market? The Pacific Institute calculates that the energy output involved in the entire lifecycle of bottled water in the U.S. is between 32 and 52 million barrels of oil.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\ufffc<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9410\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/rri-tonyrobbins-com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/21133638\/earth-03.png\" alt=\"bottled-water_carbon-dioxide_inpost\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>THE PROBLEM WITH RECYCLING<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Though the average <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bottlesupglass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Facts-About-Plastic-Bottles-and-Bottled-Water.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recycling rate<\/a> of PET bottles has been growing steadily, roughly <strong>70% of all plastic bottles still get thrown into the trash<\/strong> \u2014 often making its way into our waterways. As for the bottles that do get recycled, almost half are actually exported to other countries for recycling. This means even greater amounts of transportation-related carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9417\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/rri-tonyrobbins-com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/21133640\/earth-04.png\" alt=\"bottled-water-environment_problem-recycling_inpost\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><br \/>\nTHE MARINE ENVIRONMENT<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Bottles that aren\u2019t recycled and are improperly disposed of often end up in the ocean, taking a massive toll on the marine environment: killing animals, poisoning the food chain and smothering the ecosystem. Today, there is an estimated <a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2015\/01\/150109-oceans-plastic-sea-trash-science-marine-debris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5.25 trillion pieces<\/a> of plastic debris in the ocean. And by 2050, the World Economic Forum predicts there will be <strong>more plastic than fish in the world\u2019s oceans<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9416\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/rri-tonyrobbins-com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/21133642\/earth-05.png\" alt=\"bottled-water-environment_plastic-in-ocean_inpost\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/h3>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>GREAT PACIFIC GARBAGE PATCH<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Most of the garbage in the ocean accumulates in five relatively unexplored gyres found in the doldrums of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. Ever heard of the <strong>Great Pacific Garbage Patch<\/strong>? It\u2019s twice the size of Texas and is floating in the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Garbage Patch is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnn.com\/earth-matters\/translating-uncle-sam\/stories\/what-is-the-great-pacific-ocean-garbage-patch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">80% plastic<\/a> and weighs about 3.5 million tons \u2014 and it\u2019s not just floating there, doing nothing. Rather, the patch is constantly leeching chemicals and toxins into the water, and it is also decomposing into smaller bits of plastic that are then consumed by animals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The floating landfill also happens to be located along the migration route for populations of humpback whales, who are literally forced to swim through a sea of plastic.<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9413\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/rri-tonyrobbins-com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20211755\/bottled-water-environment_great-pacific-garbage-patch_inpost_credit-baysidejournal.com_-550x365.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/rri-tonyrobbins-com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20211755\/bottled-water-environment_great-pacific-garbage-patch_inpost_credit-baysidejournal.com_-550x365.jpg 550w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/rri-tonyrobbins-com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20211755\/bottled-water-environment_great-pacific-garbage-patch_inpost_credit-baysidejournal.com_.jpg 640w\" alt=\"bottled-water-environment_great-pacific-garbage-patch_inpost_credit-baysidejournal.com\" \/><br \/>\nIMAGE CREDIT \u00a9 BAYSIDEJOURNAL.COM<\/h6>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>HARMING WILDLIFE<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Though PET does not biodegrade, it does start to break down after prolonged exposure to sunlight and water. And these tiny pieces of plastic are ending up in the stomachs of countless marine animals and shorebirds, who can\u2019t distinguish plastic from food. Once in their system, the plastic can block or even lacerate the digestive tract, weakening and eventually starving the animal. Plastic consumed by marine life has also been shown to leech genetic-altering chemicals that impede the ability of the animal to reproduce.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Just how serious is this problem? Studies have shown that plastic pollution affects at least <a href=\"http:\/\/www.natureworldnews.com\/articles\/12846\/20150219\/update-700-marine-species-threatened-by-plastic-debris.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">700 different marine species<\/a>, and at least <strong>100 million marine mammals are killed each year from plastic pollution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9414\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/rri-tonyrobbins-com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/21133646\/earth-06.png\" alt=\"bottled-water-environment_marine-species_inpost\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>BOTTLE CAPS<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Plastic bottle tops are particularly problematic. Currently, they are not recyclable, and more and more often, they are ending up at the bottom of the ocean and in the stomachs of a variety of animal species that mistake them for food. You may have heard about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-2868708\/More-five-TRILLION-pieces-plastic-litter-seas-oceans.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">albatross<\/a> found on a Hawaiian island with a stomach full of 119 plastic bottle caps. Or the sperm whale that was found on a beach with a plastic gallon bottle that had destroyed his small intestine, and a stomach full of plastic bottles and bottle caps.<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9412\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/rri-tonyrobbins-com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20211752\/bottled-water-environment_albatross-bottle-caps_inpost_credit-Chris-Jordan-550x419.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/rri-tonyrobbins-com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20211752\/bottled-water-environment_albatross-bottle-caps_inpost_credit-Chris-Jordan-550x419.jpg 550w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/rri-tonyrobbins-com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20211752\/bottled-water-environment_albatross-bottle-caps_inpost_credit-Chris-Jordan.jpg 640w\" alt=\"bottled-water-environment_albatross-bottle-caps_inpost_credit-Chris-Jordan\" width=\"550\" \/><br \/>\nIMAGE CREDIT \u00a9 CHRIS JORDAN<\/h6>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>YOUR HEALTH<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Plastic has been shown to leach toxins into the bottled water. And research has shown that this is linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tonyrobbins.com\/health-vitality\/plastic-water-bottles-safe\/\">health problems<\/a> as severe as reproductive issues and cancer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There are also other health concerns that result from consuming fish that have eaten plastic. Ongoing research explores how these toxic particles pass on to us when we eat seafood, as trace amounts then build up in our bodies over time.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>WHAT YOU CAN DO<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Despite these alarming facts, plastic continues to be one of the world\u2019s most popular materials. In fact, <strong>plastic use is expected to double in the next 20 years<\/strong>, with the World Economic Forum estimating that by 2050, the amount of plastics produced globally will reach a staggering 1,124 million tons.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And when you do the math on the amount that will end up in landfills, the total amount of carbon dioxide pumped into the atmosphere, and the plastic packaging that escapes collection systems and makes its way to our oceans \u2014 the future becomes deathly frightening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But it doesn\u2019t have to be that way. Consumer demand is what drives plastic sales, and plastic production for that matter. By making small shifts in your lifestyle, you can take a powerful stand against plastic pollution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">With a reusable drink container, the average person can eliminate the need for 100 disposable bottles per year. This is the exact reason that San Francisco recently made the move to become the first city in America to ban the sale of plastic water bottles. And why San Francisco and Chicago airports, among others, introduced water filtration stations, where you can see the ticker account for how many plastic water bottles you \u201csaved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Apart from reducing your use of plastic bottles:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u2022 Say no to plastic straws, and make every effort you can to swap out plastic bags for reusable shopping and produce bags<br \/>\n\u2022 Purchase items like laundry detergent in cardboard boxes rather than plastic jugs<br \/>\n\u2022 Opt for cloth diapers over disposable ones<br \/>\n\u2022 Choose matches over lighters<br \/>\n\u2022 Don\u2019t use plasticware when you can use silverware<br \/>\n\u2022 Pack your lunch in reusable containers and bags<br \/>\n\u2022 And, as if this needs to be said, recycle every item you possibly can<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The rate at which we go through plastic is simply not sustainable \u2014 especially for the environment.
