A number of years ago, Mom and Dad decided to move from their house to a retirement community.<\/p>\n

This was a major down-size in space, so our whole family pitched in to help Mom and Dad<\/p>\n

decide what to keep, what to sell, what to give away, and what to throw away.<\/p>\n

My job was to help Dad go through his library of books to determine which ones he wanted to keep.<\/p>\n

I estimate the number of books was close to 3000!<\/p>\n

Because of Dad’s health, he was not able to focus so the job was mainly up to me.<\/p>\n

As I started looking at all of the books, I realized we could take only a fraction of the total,<\/p>\n

so I came up with a solution.<\/p>\n

We would keep only the ones that Dad had personally written in, highlighted, and marked up.<\/p>\n

I would open the book, flip the pages, and look for his markings. Almost immediately,<\/p>\n

I found a book that was really marked up.<\/p>\n

I started reading the sections where Dad had underlined and made notes,<\/p>\n

and I realized this book was a source for one of the topics he loved to speak on.<\/p>\n

It was like I was holding buried treasure! The genesis of one of Dad’s speeches was in my hands!<\/p>\n

I closed the book to see what book it was.<\/p>\n

The title: Buried Treasure by Rabbi Daniel Lapin.<\/p>\n

I had indeed found buried treasure<\/p>\n

– and Dad had left markers for us to see where his wisdom had come from!<\/p>\n

X marks the spot! Looking through all of the books became a treasure hunt.<\/p>\n

Question for you:<\/p>\n

What buried treasure are you leaving your family?<\/p>\n

Idea: What if the books that meant the most to you<\/p>\n

– the ones that influenced your thinking on success, family, business, and relationships<\/p>\n

– what if you marked them up and left personal notes for those you love to find?<\/p>\n

A note like: “This section on love really makes me appreciate Mary even more.” Or, “<\/p>\n

I am going to share this lesson on leadership with John as he starts his new year in school.”<\/p>\n
